A superb gold aureus of the Emperor Nero struck at the Rome mint following the coinage reform of AD 64. Laureate head right, NERO CAESAR AVGVSTVS; reverse, Jupiter seated left holding thunderbolt and sceptre, IVPPITER CVSTOS. Sharply struck on a broad flan with lustrous fields and a warm honey tone in the recesses.
Historical Background
The IVPPITER CVSTOS reverse type was introduced after the discovery of the Pisonian conspiracy in AD 65, presenting Jupiter as the personal guardian of the emperor. Aurei of this issue are among the most artistically accomplished of the Julio-Claudian period.
Condition Notes
Minor marks in the obverse field consistent with circulation; no signs of cleaning, mounting or tooling. Edge intact.
